Project 30: I’m not the fangirl type…But this is an exception.

One of my favorite books of all time

I heard that A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg was a good read, so I decided to buy my own copy. But I was pleasantly surprised that it was and is a GREAT read. I now regret that I didn’t buy the hardbound copy of the book because my paperback is just ratty from being read and reread. I just finished reading it for the 3rd time, and I want to read it again and again and again. What is it about Miss Molly’s writing that I just can’t get enough of? What is it that makes the un-fangirl in me swoon?

Project 30: Japanese Kewpie Mayonnaise…Certified OISHI!

This baby is evil. He / She / It will hypnotize you to BUY....

I went to our neighborhood Asian grocery store, 1004 Korean Mart in Al Barsha, to grab a big bottle of sweet soy sauce. Of course, being my usual googly eyed grocery shopper, I strolled happily through each aisle, eyeing interesting foodstuff for possible future purchase. I came there for the sweet soy sauce only, right?

But then…

Project 30: How not to cheat on your diet

Some rules on how to avoid "DIET FAIL" (Image from the failblog.org)

I promised myself that this 2012 I will lose all 20 lbs I gained ever since I got here to Dubai. Basically that’s deflating my round self by some stroke of magic. Since we all know that when it comes to dieting, there is no such thing as magic; I have to subscribe to the ancient art of discipline since I do still want to eat basically anything and everything I want in moderation, so set myself some simple rules to follow. Here are the rules on how I stop myself from cheating on my diet:

Project 30: Cooling down in the dead of fake winter

Why the need to cool down during wintertime?

I arrived in Dubai last June in the middle of the hottest summer I have ever experienced in my life. It was THAT hot, considering that I was born and raised in a tropical country which is right smack on the equator. I was in the desert so what the heck did I even expect? I did expect the scorching summer sun, but the suffocating humidity? That I did not expect at all.

So now that the weather has cooled down significantly, requiring an additional layer of clothing (preferably something a bit thick like wool for those of us who aren’t built for the cold weather) on top of your day-to-day garb, why have I been guzzling down iced tea on a daily basis?!?

Project 30: “Try and try until you die…”

Try lang ng try...Go lang ng Go!

When we were much younger, answering our friends autograph books was one of the most fun things we’d do over recess. Each person had to answer questions such as the superficial “What is your favorite color?” or “Who is your favorite actor / actress?” and more intimate questions like “Who is your first love?” or “Who was your first kiss?”

Some took these questions seriously, so you’d end up with juicy details about those people. Some pretty much wrote down standard answers. For example…

Project 30: Modern Day Life Journals

Here's to keeping all the memories in tact. (image from abeautifulrippleeffect.com)

My memory isn’t as sharp as I want it to be. If you ask me what I was doing and what I was feeling the moment before I reached the top of the stage on my university graduation, I would give you a blank stare because I hardly remember anything. And to think that university graduation was barely 10 years ago. I’m definitely not an old lady with a memory chomping virus in my head. Sadly, I learned to train my brain to declutter and purge it of old memories: sounds, sights, textures, smells, tastes and feelings. Unfortunately, I did not get to save quite a number of memories in video, in pictures or in writing. So now, all of those memories are now gone, pushed off the cliffs of oblivion…

Project 30: Cooking to perfection

It looks like fried rice but believe me it does taste like paella.

I’m not a serious devout believer of Zodiac signs, but my personality is quite identical to my Zodiac sign. I was born in the month of September, which makes me a Virgo. And one of the key characteristics of Virgos is being a perfectionist.

I don’t consider myself as a hardcore, pure perfectionist, who will work tirelessly at anything and everything to achieve perfection. But I can say I am a different kind of perfectionist, a hybrid of sorts. Or if I may say it in my neurotic, nit picking point of view: a freak of nature perfectionist. Feel free to tell me what you think after my big revelation…

Project 30: Is Happy-Ever-After the end?

Is it really the end? (Image from saras-scrapbook.tumblr.com)

Once upon a time, there was a girl fell head over heels in love with a boy, who did not believe in Happy-Ever-After. He loved her with all his heart, but was just not sold to the whole Happy-Ever-After idea. Despite his resistance to the entire concept, this girl truly and firmly believed with all her heart and soul that this boy was The One, the answer to her life long prayer of true love, the one who would make her life extra complete (She did think she was complete, but felt she needed someone to make her better). She held on to this belief, her faith in true love unwavering, for nine long years. Until he finally gave in…

Project 30: ‘Tis the season for food traditions

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLLpRLPhacs&feature=g-u

Christmas can make you very happy (Imagine all those kids anticipating the tearing-up-the-gift-wrapper-like-a-madman moment) or can make you quite melancholy…This time around ’tis is not the season to be super jolly for me. On top of missing my family and friends back home, I will surely be missing all our food traditions (and many other Filipino Christmas traditions as Mikey Bustos narrates in the above video) on this season of eating…

Project 30: Born Round too!

One of my favorite food reads (Image from www.amateurgourmet.com)

I enjoy reading food literature books that I can relate with: when the writer has gone through similar life experiences as I have or when the writer shares the same life principles, beliefs as I have. Born Round by Frank Bruni is one of those books. It is one of my ultimate favorite books because I can really relate with some of Frank’s life stages and his struggle with weight, which is a constant struggle of mine, especially now that I’ve packed in a good (but really BAD) 10-kilos in the past 5-months. My heaviest weight EVER. Not good right?
