Julia Child and I

In the background, as I am typing this blog entry, is the high-pitched, nasal and gushy voice of Meryll Streep playing culinary legend Julia Child in the movie Julie & Julia. I am not ashamed to admit that I watch this movie, or just have it as a background while I go about my house chores especially when ironing my clothes, at least once a week.

Julia Child, unlike Julie Powell whose relationship with the American culinary legend stemmed from a childhood memory, has never played a key role during my childhood. Her show, The French Chef, never seemed to have made it in the programming of the then wee 5-TV channel selection in the Philippines. So this movie marked the beginning of my relationship with the endearing Julia Child.

Comfort me with comfort food

Lately, it’s been busier more than ever and how I wish that I could go on with my business and activities even without sleep. I honestly think that when you want to do more with your life, sleep sometimes gets in the way (though I do love sleep too). But again, even if I’ve been jumping from one deadline to another, I still can’t help feeling homesick sometimes.

Some books are worth waking up to…

The recurring theme of the past two days has been “sleep all day”. Literally. But today, in particular, was worth waking up to and wasting some precious sickly energy on because of these books. These Filipino cuisine books were lovingly bought by my family and sent through the kindness of a friend, who came home to Manila and went back here in Dubai.

Would somebody grant my Philippine cuisine book wish list?

In my sick bed, I’ve been dreaming and salivating about my future Philippine cuisine book collection. I already have one too many books at the moment, but I really cannot help but think of these books as a necessity for my self-appointed role as Philippine food expert a.k.a. Filipino food ambassadress here in Dubai (Delusional me? Maybe. Okay, yes.).

Is March too early to have a wish list? Are wish lists only for Christmas?

To educate those who relocate…

To help us deal with THIS situation (Image from www.adocica.tumblr.com)

I’ve mentioned countless times that I do enjoy a number of books that I can relate too. Lately, I’ve been hooked on books with stories that share my current situation: relocation. These stories somehow burst your bubbles of expectation and show you what you should really expect in these wonderful foreign places. Because I do believe that it is of utmost necessity for people, who are relocated to be educated about their destination. This should hopefully make it easier for one to settle into the new place to call home…

Project 30: I’m not the fangirl type…But this is an exception.

One of my favorite books of all time

I heard that A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg was a good read, so I decided to buy my own copy. But I was pleasantly surprised that it was and is a GREAT read. I now regret that I didn’t buy the hardbound copy of the book because my paperback is just ratty from being read and reread. I just finished reading it for the 3rd time, and I want to read it again and again and again. What is it about Miss Molly’s writing that I just can’t get enough of? What is it that makes the un-fangirl in me swoon?

Project 30: Born Round too!

One of my favorite food reads (Image from www.amateurgourmet.com)

I enjoy reading food literature books that I can relate with: when the writer has gone through similar life experiences as I have or when the writer shares the same life principles, beliefs as I have. Born Round by Frank Bruni is one of those books. It is one of my ultimate favorite books because I can really relate with some of Frank’s life stages and his struggle with weight, which is a constant struggle of mine, especially now that I’ve packed in a good (but really BAD) 10-kilos in the past 5-months. My heaviest weight EVER. Not good right?
