When you know that a visit to a place is most likely once in a lifetime, you take it all in, as much as you can, in the limited time you have been given. We were in Kansas City for two weeks and we’d never know when we’d get the chance to visit again.
I actually hit a BBQ wall after non-stop Kansas City BBQing in other places. I never had so much meat in my life that my jaws, stomach (and A$s) were screaming for a break. My body was craving for fiber-rich vegetables and fruits.
But we were driving in the area, one that we may never get the chance to drive past by again, so might as well make a beeline for LC’s BBQ, one of the must eat at Kansas City BBQ places.
Okaaaaay, fine. Just this one time and then I should abstain from BBQ for a while.
The Husband and I were early. We made we were as the best bits of Kansas City BBQ: burnt ends, sell out fast. Early birds get the best BBQ. I think we were one of the first customers of the day.
The place was heavy with smoke because the smoker is inside the restaurant rather than outside. This is another place where you do need to dress down. LC’s BBQ was an old school joint with tables and chairs (the kind that they never make anymore – made of solid wood), two stand-up refrigerators that kept your beverages ice cold, a TV where you watch Kansas City teams: Royals (baseball) and Chiefs (football), the counter where you order, a restroom, and, strangely, an office desk with two metal file cabinets.
Apparently, LC himself goes to office here. It is his office indeed! But we didn’t get to see him that day.
So we marched up the counter and ordered a plate of LC’s famous Kansas City BBQ burnt ends with sides of fried mushroom and spicy fried green beans. Boy was I overwhelmed when I was called up the counter to pick up out order.
We were served a mountain of burnt ends, smothered in BBQ sauce. As you do in Kansas City. I thought that the plate was more than enough to feed 3-4 people. And for $8.99, it was so much bang for a few bucks.
To me, it was not the best burnt ends I’ve ever had, but The Husband thinks otherwise. He said that if we had the chance to visit Kansas City in the future, he’d head straight to LC’s BBQ for those burnt ends.
Their sauce was awesomesauce to say the least! It had the perfect balance of sweet, tang and spicy kick. The best Kansas City BBQ sauce I must say. I’m not a fan of BBQ sauce (Maybe influenced by Texas BBQ philosophies), but I don’t mind BBQ smothered with LC’s BBQ sauce.
The deep fried sides I also enjoyed. Though these are not made from scratch (I peeped behind the counter…Ssssssshhhhh!), they did deep fry the musrooms and green beans right. Crunchy shell, juicy and not cold vegetable insides.
I demolished all the sides with the help of The Husband and we took leftover brisket to the hotel to eat.
My hunch was right and we’ve not been to Kansas City in months. I don’t see another visit anytime in the near future, so I am glad that we grabbed all the BBQ eating opportunities we had.
