To me, avocado is a fruit. It always was and always will be.
Back home, we slice it open, remove the pit, scoop out the buttery flesh, lightly mash it, drizzle a generous amount of condesed milk, add ice cubes and place in the freezer to cool. It one of the simplest yet most indulgent desserts one could ever have. Sometimes we even whizz it in the blender with milk, sugar and ice to make it a shake.
Even in Dubai, the avocado shake is one of the most popular fare at the juice bars.
Avocadoes have never ventured to the vegetal, savory side of the food spectrum…until Texas happened.
Guacamole and chips are a thing here, but I never dared touch a bowl of guacamole. Well, guacamole never made its way to our table. We never bothered to order a bowl. Besides we were content with our chips and salsa, because, aside from the fact that those were free, The Husband and I still cannot get over the fact that the avocado is a fruit for desserts.
Somehow avocadoes are considered a vegetable here, which doesn’t usually finds its way onto the dessert plate.
One of our Pinoy friends shared how his colleagues would give him puzzled looks whenever they saw him preparing his avocado dessert in the office pantry. He had it with milk (or coffee creamer) and sugar, of course.
Until one day, I was forced to try guacamole. I was caught between getting over my fear of the split personality fruit-vegetable or being rude to our host, who was The Husband’s boss. I’m sure you know what I did. I couldn’t risk a possible point against The Husband at work. I know his boss would be crazy to take a personal idiosyncrasy to the job performance evaluation, but still, one could not be too sure.
It was a job or the savory avocado. Gulp. I took a deep breath as my chip took a dive into the mountain of glistening green gloop. I only picked up a speck, just in case I didn’t like it.
Hmmm…It was creamy yet with a refreshing tang and a bit of crunch from the onions. Guacamole is good. I took a handful more of chips and just dipped and dunked them into the guacamole bowl.
Savory avocado isn’t so bad after all!
Nowadays, guacamole is a welcome addition to the table. I’ve even attempted to make it at home! I’ve also had it on burgers, tacos and deep fried as a side.
So is avocado a fruit or a vegetables? Well, who cares, it is good as any 🙂
