When you’ve come from countries where labor is inexpensive and you could actually afford to pay for their services, doing things yourself is a big change. I remember how on our first encounter with the self-service gas pump, we stared at the pump for five minutes and scooped out what other people were doing because we had no clue how to pump gas ourselves. FYI, you have gas boys to help you out in the Philippine and Dubai.
And when you are travelling or live in a state where you don’t have the luxury of having your own washer and dryer in home, you would have to deal with the coin laundry. For those like me, who are completely alien to how to work the coin laundry, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to deal with it:
Things you need:
- LOTS of quarters (25 cents) If you don’t have change, ask change from the hotel’s front desk. Or maybe wait until you get more than enough change.
- Single-dose detergent and fabric softener packets
- Dryer sheets (optional)
- Laundry bag and/or basket to carry your laundry
Step 1: Have a stack of quarters, more than enough to cover one load. Why? Because the washer / dryer may not accept all quarters you have.
Step 2: Look around for instructions on how to use the washer / dryer. Not all machines are the same in hotels. Then READ WELL.
Step 3: Load your laundry and the single-dose detergent and fabric conditioner packet inside the washer.
Step 4: Insert enough quarters to cover one load. Some only charge a dollar and some charge more. This one in New Jersey charged $2.25 per load. Note that costs are separate for washing and drying.
Step 5: Customize settings of the washer. I personally prefer washing with cold water since they’ve said that hot water shrinks clothes more. Does it? At this point in time, I can’t afford for our clothes to shrink.
Step 6: Press start then wait. The washer / dryer will tell how long it will take to finish a batch of laundry.
VOILA! Then just pray that not any one of your clothes would shrink or get any damage. Hehehe!
