When you’re surrounded by overly sweet supposedly savory dishes from American fast casual chains, you will crave this beautiful Asian plate of rice, vegetables and meat. The complete Asian meal.
And your best bet for this would be an Asian grocery. In Piscataway, New Jersey, head over to the Asian Food Market. It is a treasure trove of almost ANYTHING Asian food related.
Apart from your usual grocery items like meat, produce, other bottled / boxed ingredients and kitchen knick knacks like dippers, chopsticks among others, they also have a bakery and a take out counter where you can buy packed lunch or dinner.
Their lunch special, costs less than $10, comes with your choice of two viands, rice or noodles and hot soup. And this can actually feed two hungry people.
And did I mention that they serve Chinese roasts? Duck, soy chicken, crispy pork bellies. Oh yeah. You can order them by the pound.
One great thing about Asian groceries in New Jersey is that they have a wider selection of Filipino ingredients than what we have here in Texas. Clearly, there are more Filipinos over there than here.
Apart from the usual halo-halo ingredients, you have a great selection of vinegars, favorite snacks like Choc-nut, Choco Mallows, Curly Tops, Chippy and V-Cut potato chips, my favorite peanut butter – Lily’s and canned corned beef in outrageous flavors like barbeque and kaldereta.
You can’t imagine how an Asian grocery can feel like heaven for expats like myself. You’ll just know when you’re one.
