In the Philippines, fast food chains start advertising their fish fares a month before the start of Ash Wednesday since majority of practicing Catholics do abstain from meat as part of the Lenten tradition. So I was quite surprised to stumble upon this particular billboard in SoCal when I tagged along with The Husband on a business trip.
Though the billboard’s copy (i.e. text) did not imply any religiosity, as a practicing Catholic, I just knew that Fridays were meant for fish. So billboard are you talking to me?
We just got from Texas over the weekend and I’ve never seen any Fish themed billboards here in Texas. I suppose there are more practicing Catholics / Christians (Do other Christian denominations also practice abstinence on Fridays of Lent?) in Southern California than our part of Texas? Or is this a nationwide phenomenon since I caught Wendy’s and Carl’s Jr promoting their fish sandwiches on TV?
Anyways, its a Friday once again, so if you are observing Lent, don’t forget to eat your fish 🙂
