A pleasant surprise inside

One of the things I love about Dubai is the random surprises you get from the unexpected places. Who would’ve thought that you could enjoy fragrant biryani inside a clay pot (or palayok as we call it in Filipino), covered with a crispy sheet of dough?

The thought of it being cooked in a clay pot in a brick oven is just genius! I love it!

When The Husband opened the cake box like container it came in, we just had to take pictures before we tore through the still-warm dough crust. This is obviously the first time that I’ve seen this kind of biryani. Do you know what type of biryani this is? Does it have any special name? Anyone? Help!

UPDATE (As of Mar 1, 2012, 10:23PM): The Indian food experts (dear readers) have spoken! This biryani treat is similar to the treat called Dum Biryani, which is apparently a very popular way of cooking biryani in Hyperabadi, a province city in a state in India :-)

Delirious about delicious,

Didi

P.S. The Husband ordered his dum biryani from Shoo Laziz in Al Barsha, Dubai. They also serve all sorts of this potted biryani: chicken (the one he ordered), meat, and fish. They also make a mean manakeesh ;-) Call +971-4-323-4555 or +971-4-323-4151. Enjoy!

Super thanks everyone for shedding some light onto this biryani question of mine :-)

  • Chef Sankalp

hi, the biryani featured above is only served in the claypot and is miles away from the actual method of “dum” cookery. as some other comments mention, gazebo does a very good job of the dum style biryani and so does lucky biryani in bur dubai, which does a very good job of a non dum biryani :)

also, hyderabad is not a province in India but a city in a state :)

Thanks for the corrections Chef! I have yet to drop by Gazebo for authentic dum style biryani.
