I was so disappointed, or maybe more like appalled, on how the Gulf News did this feature on “Demystifying Filipino food”. Sure, the feature was 2-minutes long, but you can do a LOT of demystifying in that period of time…
I think a more well thought of feature could have been made to demystify Filipino food. First, and most important of all, as demystifying is the supposed premise of the feature, they could have started with the questions non-Filipinos have about Filipino food. But they didn’t, so what was there to demystify? They wrote such a misleading headline! Argh! Insert *hair pulling* now!
Second, aside from the fact that our cuisine is not “meat centric” and our cuisine is “so vast”, what else is there about our food that can attract non-Filipinos, who have such different tastes? How can you make Indians, Pakistanis, Europeans, Americans, Arabs and other races here in the UAE believe that they will like our cuisine? Did they even other to actually ask them what would motivate them to try Filipino food? Insert more *hair pulling* here.
Third, is there actually an increasing number of non-Filipinos purchasing Filipino food from the groceries or eating at Filipino food establishments? Is the interest of non-Filipinos in Filipino food the reason for the increase of Filipino food products in the market? Or is it the increasing number of Filipinos, who work in Dubai and long for a taste of home, the reason for the increase in number of the Filipino food products? I really think and believe it is the latter.
Lastly, with the maximized exposure of Mama Sita, it is obviously a feature on this Filipino mixes / sauce brand. They would could have baptized the feature “How Mama Sita gives Filipinos in the UAE a taste of home” instead. *face palm*
Insert final *hair pulling* episode here.
But despite this frustration on what I think is an epic fail Filipino food feature, I see an opportunity to help TRULY demystify my home cuisine in my own little way. Hmmm…this smells like a new project eh?
So, what do YOU (Yes, you non-Filipino reading my blog!) want to demystify about Filipino food?
Delirious about delicious,
Didi
