My memory isn’t as sharp as I want it to be. If you ask me what I was doing and what I was feeling the moment before I reached the top of the stage on my university graduation, I would give you a blank stare because I hardly remember anything. And to think that university graduation was barely 10 years ago. I’m definitely not an old lady with a memory chomping virus in my head. Sadly, I learned to train my brain to declutter and purge it of old memories: sounds, sights, textures, smells, tastes and feelings. Unfortunately, I did not get to save quite a number of memories in video, in pictures or in writing. So now, all of those memories are now gone, pushed off the cliffs of oblivion…
I now deeply regret I did not get to preserve those memories because there is no way to resurrect or reconstruct them piece by piece, unless time travel has already been invented. But thanks to technology, preserving memories is as easy as a click of of button. A digital camera captures images of what you look like, whether dolled up, au natural or just butt-ugly. A high-definition camcorder captures live action shots of your antics, your dance moves, your swagger.
Though there are still a couple of things that cannot be captured and immortalized with a click of a button: smells, tastes and feelings. We still have to etch these experiences into memory the old fashioned way, through words. We do write onto paper or do type onto a word processing program. Technology still plays a big role in documenting smells, tastes and feelings because, today, we have the option to share these memories to the world instead of just keeping to ourselves. At the same time, technology allows us to connect to a few or even thousands or maybe millions of kindred souls, going through the same experiences, making us feel less alone or maybe even less weirded out.
This is why I love blogs. I’ve been reading them since 2004 or 2005ish (I told you I have a poor memory!), when blogs were virtually (pun intended) a puzzle to many. Till this day, I read blogs on a daily basis and I must say I am quite addicted to them, occupying a chunk of my time each day. I just adore the realness of the lives of these people and how open they are to share random and even spectacularly ordinary milestones of their lives. Quite obviously, because of my love for food, I do gravitate towards food blogs more than any other blog out there. Food blogs actually make up 75-80% of my entire Google Reader subscription list. Hahaha! Can you guess which are my all time favorite blogs to read?
This is also the very reason why I signed on this deranged 365 blog post project. I just want to make sure I don’t miss any more memories and etch these memories and thoughts into all eternity. Hopefully this 365 blog post project turns into a 1,825 blog post project because I do intend to document every single day of the next 5 years of my life (that is IF I still am alive and well then). I hope and pray I do have the energy to do that.
Delirious about delicious,
Didi
