Shakin’ Me Up at Shake Shack, Dubai

Shaken not Stirred

My world is pretty much shaken to the core. I am going through a number of major life transitions and it’s not been easy.

  • Getting married to my ex-boyfriend (now The Husband) after 9-years. Finally.
  • Going to Dubai after much whining and pining throughout a 3-year long distance relationship. Again. Finally.
  • Working on getting our government documents done so that I can join The Husband here in Dubai. So being the neurotic me, I am already thinking about leaving home sweet home: my family, my friends…practically my entire life behind.

There are times that I feel it is just too much too soon. The other night I was just so shaken that I lost my appetite. This was it. I’ve hit the wall. Until…

Before coming home from work, The Husband asked me where I wanted to eat for dinner. I must admit my tummy was growling so loud because I did not have anything decent inside me the entire day. So I took the offer graciously and then whispered: “I want to eat at the Shake Shack.” The Husband chuckled. He knew that food was a sure upper to my down trodden spirits, even if I’ve seemingly lost my appetite.

Shake Shack in Mall of The Emirates, Dubai

The Shake Shack is apparently one of the most popular burger shacks in New York City. Droves of people would line up under the sun for an hour just to get a burger from The Shack Shake. So the ever curious me wanted to know what the fuss was all about. Were the Shake Shack burgers THAT good? After taking a peek of the reviews here, here and here AND snooping around the Shake Shack in MOE, I thought it was worth a try. I am a sucker for anything new and popular anyway.

Shake Stack at 39 AED a pop

I ordered the Shake Stack (39 AED), a greasy tower of all-beef patty; a deep-fried panko (japanese bread crums) coated, mozarella cheese stuffed portabello mushroom; lettuce; tomatoes; and cheese inside a soft bun. The burger was not enough. Of course. So I also ordered cheese fries (22 AED?) and a single serve frozen custard (19AED) – the Marshmallow Crispy ‘Crete (just because I’m not a chocolate person). I just had to taste what a frozen custard was.

Shake Stack with Cheese Fries and Frozen Custard

So did Shake Shack manage to shake off my misery and uplift my spirits? Yes AND no.

I loved the fact that the ‘Shroom of the Shake Stack burger was literally oozing with cheese. I was definitely not shortchanged with that. But the burger was a bit too greasy. Then again, what did I expect from a burger?!? Oiliness is the Godliness of fastfood for crying out loud.

Look at that cheese!

The cheese fries, on the other hand, were too ordinary for me. It was fries with cheese sauce. So I would no come back for this. It made me miss my most beloved fries in the whole wide world. But unfortunately, those fries are thousands of miles away from me. It would have been perfect with the Shake Stack burger.

Marshmallow Crispy 'Crete

Finally, the frozen custard was basically ice cream with a cool marketing spin. Hehehe. But this is what sealed the deal for me. I wouldn’t go back for the burger, but I would go back for the “frozen custard” / ice cream. Smooth, creamy with a bit of crunch from the crispies. It had enough sugar to give me a temporary high for two straight days.

The Frozen Custard still haunts me

And so it did. I survived the past few days without any moping and wailing. Thanks for shaking me up Shake Shack…at least for now.

Shake Shack burger was just ok for me nothing mmm really special to make me line up under the sun to get a stash. I still prefer Brothers Burger back home.

@ abigail: I also thought the burger was just ok. Except that the ‘shroom had so much cheese. They had me at cheese! I love cheese! I’d go back for the frozen custard though :-) Brain freeze sugar high!

ha! our reviews of Shake Shack match almost perfectly! yumo ‘shroom patty, not great cheese fries, and looove the custard. wow, uncanny …if we’d gone there together, we could’ve just kept shut and known EXACTLY what the other was thinking through each bite ;)

@ Arva: Hmmmm maybe our hungry taste buds to think alike? Hehehe :-)

Hey Didi. I too reviewed Shake Shack when it opened; http://foodiva.net/2011/04/not-just-one-burger-but-three/ Am a huge fan from NY, and do think they have managed to recreate the same high quality here. But from what I hear and read, it’s either love or hate…:)

    • Didi

@ Foodiva: Well hello there! I guess being able to compare the Dubai Shake Shack and the one in NYC makes a significant difference in the review. I wouldn’t say that I loved it loved it,if you know what I mean. I loved the frozen custard and the ‘shroom and may go back for these babies some time soon. But part of me (as a newcomer to Dubai) wants to check out other burger options (that are not part of the mainstream burger chains) so that I have a better basis of comparison. All I have in my eating arsenal are the burger places back home. Hehehe!

    • Didi
